In 1874, eighteen-year-old John Singer Sargent left Florence, Italy to study painting in Paris. Sargent first achieved recognition for ambitious portraits and bold canvases that pushed the boundaries of convention. This placed him in the epicenter of modernism’s germination, while catapulting the young American to the top of the late 19th century art world.
